Hi Mesick families! This weeks topic is self-esteem. What is self esteem, and why is it important? It’s used to describe a person’s overall sense of self-worth or personal value. It’s very important , because kids who feel good about themselves feel liked and accepted, confident, proud of what they do, and they believe in themselves. Kids with low self-esteem are critical of themselves, they focus on failures instead of successes, and lack confidence and a willingness to try new things at times. Self-esteem starts as early as babyhood and is important to grow from there! Early on, it can be showing positive attention, care, and acceptance. This week, I will share some activities to help build older student’s self-esteem. Here’s an activity that celebrates your child's traits and abilities through a self portrait activity! https://www.pbs.org/parents/crafts-and-experiments/build-confidence-with-a-self-portrait "The way we talk to our children becomes their inner voice." -Peggy O'mara Have a great week! -Ms. Stevens

Hi Mesick families! Connection and kindness- here are some ways we can stay connected in a time when we often feel so disconnected. Along with online platforms like google hangouts and zoom, and talking over the phone, here are a few ideas of ways to connect and take a break from screens: 1. Get a pen pal! Write a letter, postcard, or card to someone you know to let them know you’re thinking about them. Bonus- you can practice writing and patience too! 2. RAK- Random Act of Kindness. It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines, but that doesn’t eliminate all kind acts! Here are some examples: write or draw or create something to send to a friend or an older adult who may be lonely at this time, make a positive sign to put in your yard (or a neighbors), leave a note for your mail person or another essential worker as a thank you, send a note or thank you to your teacher or school staff, or even help out a little more around the house! 3. Make a gratitude jar- try and get your whole family to participate too! Write down things you are grateful for (small and big) put them in a jar, and read them at the end of the week. 4. Every family has a different schedule, but try and find 10 minutes or more to do a non-electronic activity together. This could be a playing board game, playing cards, cooking a meal, a conversation, building something, learning something new etc. 5. Connect with nature! Get outside and explore, see, feel, listen and touch things in nature and remember that all things are connected! “Do small things with great love” -mother Teresa Have a kind weekend! -Ms. Stevens
