Safety Officer

Scope of Responsibilities

The campus safety officer maintains a safe and secure educational environment for the students and staff. Duties include monitoring hallways, entrances and exits of buildings, managing crowd control at major events, maintaining safety and order on school grounds, assisting building administration on investigating student discipline matters, investigation, preparation of incident reports, providing training to students and staff, developing emergency plans, serving as liaison with law enforcement, and coordinating security measures.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Works cooperatively with the local law enforcement agency.
  2. Assists students in situations of stress, anger and/or physical, mental, or emotional distress.
  3. Ability to provide security at school and during after school events, extra-curricular activities and weekend events when needed.
  4. Patrols school grounds and other areas that warrant observations.
  5. Assists with Investigation of student violations of school regulations.
  6. Assists the building administrator(s) in matters of physical safety, including emergency procedures, building evacuation and the protection of people in times of physical threat.
  7. Communicates effectively over two-way radio systems while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions.
  8. Investigates and assists administrators with investigations of violations of school regulations, ordinances, state statutes, or federal laws under school jurisdiction and prepares a well-written investigation report.
  9. Investigates truancy and follows district guidelines with truancy violations.
  10. Possesses Concealed Weapons Permit and openly carries a weapon on school property.
  11. Respond to potential/active school violence events, scenes of crimes, crowd control, accidents and other emergency situations.
  12. Monitor/Search school security cameras.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Prior experience as a police officer or military experience.
  2. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  3. Knowledge of safety, security and law enforcement practices and procedures.
  4. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  6. Ability to work well with other campus safety officers and school staff.
  7. Possess and maintain First Aid certification.
  8. Good communication and writing skills.
  9. Evidence of desirable work record (i.e. low absenteeism, good job performance, flexibility).
  10. Willingness to become acquainted with students, interact with students, and establish rapport with students

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prior experience as a police officer, military officer, or security officer.
  2. Trained in the following: (a) de-escalation; (b) b) positive behavioral interventions and supports; (c) conflict resolution, peer mediation, or other restorative justice techniques; (d) student search and seizure; and (e) fire suppression and hazardous materials.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of school policy/procedures.
  4. Knowledge of harassment and anti-bullying and cyber-bullying laws.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of Michigan’s Statewide School Safety Information Policy and the Family Educational Rights the Privacy Act (FERPA).
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of Michigan’s Emergency Seclusion and Restraint Law.
  7. School Safety Officer Course through the National Association of School Resource Officers (willing to attend if needed.)
  8. First Responder/EMT Certification, CPR/AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)
  9. Criminal justice background

Preferred Certificates: (If not obtained willing to get)

  1. Pepper spray certification
  2. Arrest/Control Techniques (ACT)

This is a non-union position. Anticipated start date: August 2018.
